Pastor’s Bookshelf - Welcome to my bookshelf! Each month I will discuss a recent book that I’ve finished. *disclaimer; I don’t always have time to sit and read physical books, but I do quite a bit of my reading through audiobooks these days.*
This month I’d like to talk about With
By Skye Jethani
Previously I had reviewed Skye’s book “What If Jesus Was Serious?” and I mentioned that I had read my first Skye Jethani book DURING Holy Week, and even though it was the busiest week of the year for me – I couldn’t put it down! This is that book. If you read nothing else from this author – read this book. I don’t throw around the phrase “life changing” carelessly – but this book hits that level.
Using different prepositions, Skye outlines the way many people interact with God in our daily lives. Some of us try to live UNDER God, OVER God, FROM God or even FOR God. Skye shows us how each of these positions captures some element of the truth – but in the end is deficient. Then Skye introduces a final preposition: living WITH God.
If you have ever felt like your spiritual life is lacking, or missing something – this book will blow you away. I found pieces of my journey in every single position. I have lived under God, over God, from God and I’ve certainly tried to live FOR God – and every single one has left me almost satisfied but ultimately searching for more. A life WITH God is a challenging practice, but it’s a worthy calling.
It’s a book that challenges the way we think about God, and it digs deep into our motivations and the challenges to our faith. If you want to live a fulfilling life connected to God in the modern world, this book is a treasure. Each chapter ends with practical applications and questions for deeper thought and growth. I recommend you buy a copy and read it, and then buy a copy for all your friends and read it together. It’s that good.
